Marriage
by Ron Alfano

The white carpet is rolled out,
leading a white path up to the altar,
where God will soon
be a co-witness.

The bride –in her long, flowing gown,
is a perfect, angelic sight.
The groom—a prince in his handsome
attire. Soon to be a new husband.
The wedding party, and the other
customary frills, all dressed up
in beautiful formality.

“Do you take this man…?”
“I do.”
“Do you take this woman…?”
“I do.”

This ring is for the lover in you.
This ring means I’ll always be true.

“…I now pronounce you
husband and wife.

Thank you God for all this.
You have given marriage to life
so that we may have
one of the best ideas for a celebration.
a celebration that lets us commemorate,
in glorious formality, one of the
best expressions of emotion
in all of human nature—
Love.
