Dearly Loved
By Aeia Abas
"Hello!"
Matthew beamed from his seat next to the most beautiful girl he had ever seen in his life.
She smiled shyly.
"How d'you like the funeral so far?"
She shrugged.
"Dearly Beloved, we're gathered here today to celebrate the life of Violet De Mort," said the priest in front of the coffin, "We know she is up above with God."
The girl scoffed.
Matt's eyebrows shot up. "What's so funny?"
"Nothing."
"You knew her well?"
"Very well."
"I wish I did. I don't know her at all, actually."
Meanwhile, the ceremony droned on.
"You bored as I am?" he started.
"Kind of," she laughed.
"Want to play a game?"
She shrugged again.
"Question game," he suggested, "What's your favorite flavor of pie?"
"Mmm… chocolate."
They went from the question game to betting games to thumb wars to just plain conversation.
She smiled at him, "Why are you being nice to me?"
"Uhm," he said thoughtfully, "Because I like you."
She grinned, "You're stupid."
"Yah," he replied awkwardly, "But I mean it."
She didn't reply, her eyes fixated at the coffin in the front.
Matt took her hand then and held it. He smiled brightly when she didn't reject.
"I think we should get married," he whispered jokingly, "Right now."
She laughed sarcastically, "Okay."
He pulled out a stray string from his sweater and tied it to her finger.
"I now pronounce us man and wife," he said brightly.
"Till death do we part," she replied.
As if by cue, the program ended. The newlyweds lingered longer, while everyone scattered out.
"What's you're name by the way?" he asked.
But she ignored him, walking up to the coffin. He followed.
"Oh, you want to say your last good…?"
But he stopped, for the lady in the coffin was the same woman whose hands he was holding.
She nodded, "Goodbye, Matt."
And she was gone with a blink of an eye, leaving Matt alone with the corpse of Violet De Mort, his newly found and long-since lost wife.
