Candlelight
By Katherine Okpara
Dinner for two,
A candlelight affair;
Lonesome expressions
Soon melt away.
The comfort and ease
Of plush leather booths;
Shiny dress shoes
Tap restless rhythms on the marble floor.
Icy skin meets warm heart’s passion,
Timid hands reach out boldly;
Lungs inhale and minds exhale
All the toxins of a trying life.
Red velvet cupcake,
Waves of cream cheese kiss the surface;
Illuminated by radiating hearts,
Adorned carefully by love’s own intent.
A single, shiny glimmer,
Sparkles reflected on spoons;
Like dusk settling on a long, arduous day,
Realization covers my face.
Shining brightly,
Nestled gently in the waves;
Mined just for my heart,
A dazzling, unifying rock.
Peculiar as it may be,
What impresses more than the ring
Is the man whose gleaming face,
Casts beautiful shadows on my dinner plate.
