Last Of The Light
By Matthew Wilson
Look what your love has done to me.
So what do I need of it?
Think of us from better times.
And leave some chance in me to start again.
This is an unfair, unspoken contest.
Of which you have all the beauty.
And the person I was is a stranger.
You promised you would do anything for me.
So tell me you do not love me.
Hate is such a small word, yet so powerful.
I hate you, there. I said it. Practiced it before a mirror.
But I have always been a bad liar and wishing does not make it true.
I have made my heart a home for hate. At least it beats back the cold.
But please do not take my hand. I have worked so hard to make a new home.
I start the job on Monday, take Julie to the movies on Tuesday.
So do not take my hand.
You need no words to make me give them up.
