To Not Have Taught You Tears
By A.J. Huffman
I wish I could love you
as I long to love you.
Wholly.
In my dreams.
And lead you through
fabled amethyst.
Seas and rainbows
flowing gold.
You belong there.
My treasure,
at our journey’s end.
Bows of untied knots
in your hair.
Brighter
than that other night.
But a different darkness.
Colder.
Wears the line that crosses.
Bearing us into its barren folds.
To stand in sinking saline.
And forced to share.
My angel,
I would take back my touch.
Stunt it
at the wrist.
To see you
in that light.
Before.
And again.
And your eyes
would bear deserts.
Untouched.
With cotton dreams.
