In Retrospect Always
By A.J. Huffman
He said he loved her
as his fingers fell from hers.
In retrospect only.
His final promise whispered
as she watched him.
Eyes dropped from her gaze.
Right hand fumbling behind,
trying to find the escape --
the passage from this temporary world
into what he hoped would be forever.
Finality: A closed door.
Its whispered click
a last breath for a stark body
with eyes dried, longing for the pain
of familiar cliché.
Yet in truth, there was no absence.
No inkling for death.
Just foul life lingering: Unwanted.
And complete in her repugnance.
She longed to be his Juliet.
But no, she was not
that flawed. She held no excess.
Held nothing to conflict the desire.
No counter to bring blessed fear,
that blind guide to welcomed death.
No. No Juliet she.
She was more a feeling.
One feeling. For one man.
Alone
and standing at the end.
Watching her end-
less beginning.
