Along The Lake
By Brandon Barrows
The setting sun cast red-gold fingers across the water as Max walked the length of the dock where Jessie dangled her feet.
He sat and dipped his own toes. From the corner of his eye, Max could see her runny mascara and red-rimmed eyes.
After a moment, he broke the silence, “Hey.”
Jessie replied “You can say it, you know.” Max said nothing. She continued, “You knew he was a jerk all along.”
Max slipped his arm around his sister’s shoulders and squeezed. “I don’t need to.”
She leaned into him and watched as the sun slipped behind the horizon.
