Angel of the Valley
By Ceilidh Devine

This tale begins with a boy
He starts his day, by the river
At the bottom of the great valley
The river was one of sheer amazement
The roaring waves splashed, lashing at the rocks
Covering them in a white wash of water

The boy was brave to be fishing on this day
For the rain was pouring down
The heavy drops were causing the river to run at super flash speed
This was a terrible day to be down by the grand valley

He had to try and catch breakfast
Otherwise he would starve till supper
He edged towards the embankment
The noise of the river was that of sheer terror
The water was flowing with vengeance

As the boy stepped out to the rock just before him
The current was just too strong
The river wrapped around the boy
Carrying him fast towards the great rocks
His body crashed onto them
He was sure to be left for dead
Yet hope was watching over him

A girl who lived in the hilltops
Had come down to the river for water
She saw the boy’s body
Squashed between the rocks
She jumped onto one of the boulders
With all her strength, she pulled him free
Dragged him back to the embankment

She was sure he was gone
With a punch to the chest
The boy jerked up
Spurted, gasping for breath

The girl was so surprised
She ran into the forest growth
Before the boy could even think
He was sure, she was an angel

The angel of the valley
The tale that came to be known
The boy told the entire town’s folk
Of how an angel came to save him

The girl, sat for hours
Thinking of the boy
The look on his face
Would haunt her for eternity
Hours past with thoughts of the boy
She was pining to see his face once more

Every day the boy went to the river
Always looking for his saviour
Every morning he hoped
Every day he left full of woe
For his angel he never saw

Days became weeks,
Weeks onto months
Months turned to years
Never did the girl return to the river

The nights in the town had become one of a highlight
As for when the stars were out
A tune could be heard among the wind
Such a soft and delicate sound
The song was so enchanting
It carried magic through the air

The clear wisps of the wind
Pushing these beautiful sounds all around
The words were heard all through the town
The people began to sing

‘I look for you my love
I long to come and be there with you
To feel you, to hold you
To explode all my love onto you
To tell you, to show you
In the best possible way
I want to make you see all the love I behold
The only way I can, is by declaring my heart to you
That the love I have for you,
Is greater than the stars above
Is stronger them the moon’s shine
Is bigger than the sea’s bed
I saw you, and my love grew
I long to be with you
Forever in this great haste of true love
I shall come to you my dear, for I truly love you’

The girl would sit every night
Singing to the stars above
Her song was one of doubtless love
Her voice was carried down through the trees
The leaves would rustle
The wind pushing the notes down into the town

The boy who’s heart the girl was singing for
Never heard a single note
As this boy’s mind was over his angel
He had given up hope
Found himself a new saviour

A local girl from maple farm
Her graceful manner
Her beautiful smile could warm up winter
Bright pearl’s for eyes
His heart could love no other

The boy and the farmer’s daughter
Would joyfully play down by the river
Their love grew uncontrollable for each other
The boy held out his hand
Asked his love to be forever in his mind
With tear filled eyes she delightfully replied
Of course, my love, you are forever mine

The girl who sat up high above the valley
Her pondering, wondering
The wanting and the singing
Could not free her mind
Her love for the boy was true

She made way to go and declare
As the morning sun began to appear
The girl pranced down to the river
Humming her heart felt tune
The boy also headed towards the river at the bottom of the valley

First to approach was the boy carrying his spear
He heard a tune though the trees
So familiar, yet unknown
As he lured further towards the sound
A great flash of rain came fiercely down

This flash flood of water created a backwash of power
The force ripped the trees down as if it was a great fire
The ball of nature tore down the hilltops
Destroying all in its way

The girl turned her head and saw
Her love’s look, he was standing there
His stare, his proclaim of love
Was right there

The trees came hurling down the hill side
In a blink of an eye
Nature carried the girl away
Her body was led towards the great sea

The boy was stunned, he stood trembling with fear
He looked beneath and realised
He was standing upon the angel of the valleys rock
He had been saved
He was sure he had saw her between the trees
Where now stood a grand gorge of falling water

The sheer beauty of what had been created
This must be the angel’s creation
It was her making
As he turned to go and tell his tale

He heard a tune as like before
His heart awoke
His mind was clear
His love for the angel
Was now so dear...

Every night when the stars shine bright,
A song is heard in the town below the valley
If you look up at the sky and ask the angel of the valley,
You shall get your invite to see your true loves look
And your heart will play a tune that will guide you to your lovers’ soul.
