I Do
By Nikaan Matthew

I am afraid,
if I say ‘I do’ now
what will become of us?

Of course I love you
that is a given but,
as I stand here in a tuxedo which is slightly too big for me
and face a crowd of people of whom I barely even know,
I begin to question myself.

These vows, these chains
that will padlock my heart forever,
are they real?
Because today, tomorrow in twenty years’ time
I may not feel the same
as I do at this exact moment.

In fact,
I know I won’t.

They’ll all say I’m having cold feet,
that it is normal to have some doubts
but these are not simply doubts,
these are certainties.

I am certain our feelings will expire,
that this beauty we feel will grow stale and manifest.
But most of all,
I am certain that our love will slowly, very slowly turn to hate.

The priest looks at me,
his eyes prompting for an answer.
And even though these words will forever decay my heart
and rot my soul
I say:

‘I do’.

I currently study Law with Business Studies at Bangor University, I am 20 years old and have a real passion for poetry that centers around the theme of love. I am currently trying to put together a collection called "Droplets of Sunshine" that I hope to be published sometime in the future.
