Of a Woman Awaiting a Proposal
By Margaret Beaver
She is waiting, as if by a window, she is waiting.
She holds her hand in front of her, she is
imagining the weight of the ring, how it fragments
all light. She holds her hand to her chest,
heartfelt, and her breast rises with breath as if
filled with small birds fluttering inside.
She thinks of the wedding, when many white
birds will rise among them as they leave joyfully
to the marital bed. She will be happy then,
as the Spring does burst with birds of reds and
blues in the leafy branches and on the roots.
But the leaves do warm in color and the birds
traverse the distances. She wonders if she will
age and the skin will grey upon her hand,
so resting across her breast. Will she age in mind
as well, aged in waiting, as if by a window?
