The History of Your Eyes (for Annie)
By Frank Grigonis
I look into them
and see history open
like the pages
of a book of fairy tales
which are true:
your people struggling to survive
ice ages, glaciers, soldiers,
lighting fires in caves
against the fearsome beasts
and the cunning cold
while planting seeds
They were born in
all that struggle
and prevailing hope
All the hands of your ancestors
carrying them like two magic gems
through the centuries
holding them tightly, passing them on
from love to love, life to life,
from mother to child,
from hand to hand....
your eyes... your eyes... your eyes
